THE Welsh Pony and Cob Society of South Australia once again proved why it is one of the hardest-working breed societies in the state, delivering another jam-packed performance event that felt more like a picture-perfect spring show than an outing in the depths of winter.

With clear blue skies and warm sunshine, competitors and spectators alike enjoyed an atmosphere that was as bright as the ribbons on display.

This year’s Winter Performance Day, held on August 3 at the Strathalbyn Polo and Recreation Reserve, drew numerous entries across multiple disciplines, creating an exciting day of competition for riders of all ages.

From the precision of the dressage arena to the excitement of the working hunter rounds, there was something for everyone.

Two events in particular captured the crowd’s imagination: the fancy dress competition and the hobby horse working hunter classes, the latter of which combined a bit of two-legged jumping fun for the junior riders.

Negotiating an entire working hunter course tested the stamina of some very little competitors but they managed the task with surprisingly fault-free rounds.

The day showcased some outstanding performances in the breeds high point awards.

Section winners included:

  • Welsh: Dalpura Alita and Christina Johnston.

  • Part Welsh: Wynara Rainbow Dreams and Airlie Princi.

  • Riding Pony: Argyl Fine Art and Orleans Graetz.

  • Warmblood: Bon Moet and Michael Higginbottom.

  • Stockhorse: Wyann Guns and Roses and Abigail Graham.

The supreme ridden exhibit of the show was awarded to the Graetz family’s Argyl Fine Art ridden by Orleans Graetz.

The high score dressage winner was Wynara Rainbow Dreams ridden and owned by Airlie Princi.
