THE Currency Creek Horse Trials has delivered another chapter in the event’s growing reputation for excellence on the South Australian eventing calendar.
With 94 horse and rider combinations competing across eight classes, the May 30-31 event offered something for every level of combination – from grassroots riders taking their first steps in the sport in the entry-level EvA 50, to the more seasoned CCN1* eventers having a final preparation before heading to Melbourne 3DE.
A highlight for riders returning to the Bow family property in south-east of Adelaide this year was the expansion and lengthening of the cross-country course, which provided varying natural terrain and more technical lines across all grades.
The course was designed by Sylvia Roberts and built by Roger Roberts, both travelling from Queensland to lend their expertise. They were ably assisted by James Ross from the ACT, whose contribution helped bring the expanded track to life.
The EvA 95 and EvA 80 classes were the best supported of the weekend, while the CCN1* drew eight combinations at the top end of the program.
A standout theme across all classes was the consistency and quality of jumping across the weekend, with the majority of podium finishers going clear on both cross-country and show jumping — leaving dressage as the deciding factor across most of the results.

Winners (horse trials)
CCN1*: Kaitlin Teichert and Rowland took the honours with a winning score of 29.5, well clear of second-placed Tarnya Brennan and Miss Sahara on 44.3 and third-placed Jaimie Stichel and Bilney Woods on 44.5. Brennan also impressed with a fourth-place finish aboard Cordell.
EvA 95cm: The podium was decided by the narrowest of margins — just 2.1 penalties separating the top three. Matilda Kauppila and Storm Brewing won on 30.3, with Nikki Jones and Wurlyana Sports Girl second on 32.1 and Duncan Shaw and Cosmo Rock third on 32.4 — all three combinations jumping clear throughout.
EvA 80cm: The James’ narrowly missed taking out the Quinella, with Halle James and Rulers Gift winning on 23.1 and Zoe James and Gundemain Touch of Luck claiming third on 26.6. Madelyn Hanna and Rhesa Elisha split them in second on 23.8.
EvA 65cm: Lauren Roberts and Kilmallee Murphy took out the class on 27.6, ahead of Danni Hampton and Good Time Charlie on 30.9 and Renata Rix and Get Fast in third on 31.3.
EvA 50cm: Courtney Munro and RP Crawdads won with a polished double-clear score of 23.1, with Janet Davie and Kerulen Spycraft second on 27.1 and Catherine Warland and Kenlock Super Finesse third on 37.5.

Event secretary Melissa Richardson-Yates paid tribute to the volunteers and supporters who underpinned the weekend’s success.
“We couldn’t do any of this without the people who give their time so generously,” she said.
“Tracey Leigh and her family — Thomas, Josh and Mitchell — deserve a huge shoutout for their enormous contribution, and we are always grateful to Jill Bow for opening her beautiful property to us.”
With the expanded course now in place and a healthy field turning out across all grades, the Currency Creek Horse Trials looks set to grow from strength to strength.
The next event is already on the calendar — riders can look forward to returning on August 30-31. Entries and further information will be available via the Currency Creek Horse Trials Facebook page.
